First Impressions and Setup

The ProTee VX launch monitor arrives in dense, custom-cut foam with the ProTee logo carved into the insert—a small detail, but one that signals care in design. The overall build is solid and substantial. It’s not overly heavy, but it has enough weight to feel like high-tech hardware.

Included in the box are:

  • The ProTee VX launch monitor
  • Ceiling mounting bracket and screws (with anchors)
  • 32’ Ethernet cable and USB-to-Ethernet adapter
  • Power supply
  • Calibration board and bubble level
  • QR code and link to digital setup instructions

Mounting the unit is relatively straightforward. It’s designed to be installed overhead, either at 3’4” or 3’7” in front of your hitting position depending on your ceiling height (9 to 10 feet). If your ceiling is between those, you simply find a middle ground. I recommend using two people—one to position and one to secure—because the VX is a bit awkward to handle from a ladder. Once it’s mounted, it doesn’t need to move again.

The hitting area is generous: 25” x 21”. That’s large enough to comfortably use a hitting strip and easily accommodate both left- and right-handed players without repositioning the monitor or recalibrating anything.

After installation, you’ll move on to the calibration process, which uses the supplied checkerboard calibration board. This step is easier than it sounds:

  1. Place the calibration board directly on the hitting surface, centered with your tee position, and aligned square to your screen.
  2. Make sure the board is level using the included bubble level.
  3. Open ProTee Labs and navigate to the calibration menu.
  4. Click “Calibrate World”—the software will recognize the board, capture the orientation, and lock in your spatial reference.

That’s it. It takes under a minute, and there’s no need to redo it unless you move the unit or change your hitting mat. The calibration ensures that ProTee VX can accurately measure ball and club movement relative to your target line and hitting surface.

Once calibrated, all you need to do is launch ProTee Labs and you’re ready to hit. The software recognizes the device instantly and starts feeding you data in real time.

From the moment you launch it, ProTee Labs feels intuitive. Every metric, video, and visualizer is presented clearly, with drag-and-drop tiles that let you build your own layout. You can also run it on a second monitor next to your sim software (like GSPro), giving you a dual-screen experience that separates gameplay from analysis. That’s a big win for usability.

Here’s a closer look at the key features that set ProTee Labs apart:

Shot Video Replay

Each shot automatically triggers a slow-motion replay showing the moment of club-ball impact from above. The system overlays lines showing:

  • Club path
  • Club face angle
  • Ball launch direction

It pauses right at contact, giving you time to take in the details before continuing the playback. For golfers who rely on visual feedback to improve (that’s most of us), this is invaluable.

It’s also incredibly fast. There’s almost no delay between hitting the ball and seeing the replay—just enough time to look up and see it start.

Ball Spin Validator

This might be the most unique feature in the system. The Ball Spin Validator gives you actual video footage of your golf ball spinning after impact. On top of that footage, the software overlays colored tracking dots that follow the spin direction of the ball.

If the dots track the ball’s logo or markings perfectly, you know the spin was captured accurately. If they drift or move differently, something’s off. But in months of use, I’ve never seen it miss.

Swing Camera Integration

ProTee Labs supports third-party swing cameras—any USB driverless camera will work. I use one down-the-line and one face-on, and the software auto-syncs them with every shot. They replay together, automatically, at your chosen playback speed (I use ~0.3x for 120 fps cameras).

Here’s what makes it great:

  • No manual syncing or exporting
  • No buttons to press to trigger a replay
  • Just hit and review

It’s simple, automatic, and fast.

Although not in their initial release of swing camera integration, they later added an annotation feature where you can draw lines, circles, or anything else you want on the screen.

This kind of effortless swing feedback is something even some high-end systems don’t offer.

On the down-side, swing videos are not currently saved. After you hit the next shot the previous video disappears. I’ve requested that we have the option to save videos with the shot history so maybe someday they will add that feature.

I use the Kayeton 120fps cameras but have also tested the Carl’s Swing Camera set. Both work great with the ProTee VX.

Swing Camera Setup Tips

If you plan to use swing cameras with the ProTee VX, there are a few practical things worth knowing before you buy.

First, ProTee Labs works with driverless USB cameras, so you have a lot of flexibility. You can use simple USB webcams, but if you want useful slow-motion replay, I strongly recommend choosing cameras capable of at least 120 fps. That frame rate gives you much cleaner slow motion than a standard 30 fps or 60 fps camera.

Second, your camera placement matters. For a face-on camera, I like to keep it roughly 4 feet from the golf ball.

That doesn’t always capture the full club through the entire swing, but it does a great job of showing the body, arms, and hands through impact—which is often what matters most from that angle.

For the down-the-line view, I prefer to keep the camera farther back, around 7 feet from the ball, so I can capture the full swing and the full length of the club.

Third, don’t overlook lighting. Higher frame rate cameras need more light, so if your swing replay looks dark or grainy, adding a dedicated light over the hitting area can help dramatically.

I’ve also found that compact stand solutions work better than traditional tripods in a simulator room. Tripod legs take up a lot of space, which can be frustrating in a garage or smaller studio. A simple stand with a narrow footprint is often a cleaner solution.

Lastly, keep in mind that many USB cameras come with short cables, so you may need USB extension cables depending on how far your PC is from your hitting area.

This all adds up to one of the biggest advantages of the ProTee VX ecosystem: you can build a really strong swing camera setup without being locked into expensive proprietary hardware.

Custom Tabs and Layouts

ProTee Labs comes with pre-built layouts like “Summary,” “Range,” and “Swing,” but the real power is in building your own. You can:

  • Add or remove data tiles (visualizers)
  • Resize and rearrange them
  • Save and toggle between multiple views

For example, you can create a layout that only shows club path, face angle, spin axis, and your two swing videos—perfect for technical swing work. Or build a layout focused only on ball flight and dispersion for warm-ups before sim rounds.

If you’re a coach or just want a streamlined workflow, this is a big advantage.

Shot History, Session Tracking, and Dispersion Tools

One area where ProTee Labs has improved significantly is shot organization and multi-shot analysis.

The software now includes a session-based shot saving system that organizes your practice by date and session. You can expand each session, view the clubs used, and then drill all the way down to individual shots. Even better, you can show or hide data by session, club, or single shot, which makes it much easier to clean up a practice set and focus only on the shots you want to analyze.

This is especially useful if you hit a few bad swings, accidentally select the wrong club, or want to isolate just one part of a session. Instead of looking at a messy group of shots, you can quickly filter the view and get something much more meaningful.

The multi-shot dispersion view has also become far more useful. Shots are color-coded by club and plotted visually so you can quickly see patterns in direction, grouping, and consistency. Clicking on a shot highlights it on the screen and lets you inspect the individual data for that swing.

In addition to the top-down dispersion view, ProTee Labs now includes a side flight path visualizer that helps you look at trajectory and peak height from another angle. Together, these tools make it much easier to evaluate real-world tendencies across a session rather than just reacting to one swing at a time.

This feature set is particularly valuable for bag mapping, gapping sessions, and pattern recognition.

Data Table, Heat Map, and Deeper Practice Analytics

Recent ProTee Labs updates have also added several features that make the system even more useful for structured practice.

One of the most valuable is the data table visualizer, which gives you a more detailed breakdown of your shots by club. Instead of just seeing the latest shot or a few summary numbers, you can review larger groups of shots and analyze averages, median values, standard deviation, min, max, and range.

There is also now a club face heat map visualizer, which displays impact tendencies across multiple shots. Rather than only seeing the strike location for your most recent swing, you can view a larger pattern over time and quickly identify whether you tend to miss toward the toe, heel, high, or low.

Another useful addition is the carry optimizer, which compares your actual results to more optimal performance ranges based on the shot. This type of feature is often associated with fitting or efficiency analysis, and while not every golfer will use it every session, it does add another layer of insight for players who want to understand why a shot carried shorter than expected.

ProTee Labs has also added spin loft as a data point, giving advanced users another piece of information to work with when analyzing delivery and ball flight.

Club and Ball Data Accuracy

One of the standout features of the ProTee VX is its ability to deliver full club data without requiring stickers, dots, or special markings on your clubs. For most golfers—especially those who practice frequently or switch between indoor and outdoor use—this is a major convenience. But more importantly, it works.

So how does it manage to capture such detailed club data without any physical markers?

The answer lies in the ProTee VX’s use of AI and high-speed camera systems. Here’s a breakdown of how it works—and why it matters.

AI Club Recognition Instead of Stickers

Traditional launch monitors like Foresight Falcon or Uneekor Eye XO use fiducial markers (reflective stickers or dots) placed in specific patterns on the club face. These markers help the device track the club’s movement through impact, allowing it to calculate face angle, club path, and impact location with high precision. While effective, it has downsides:

  2. The onboard processing software uses AI to recognize the outline and geometry of the club head, including the face, toe, heel, and top line.
  3. From this recognition, the system places digital tracking markers—essentially virtual dots—on key parts of the club face.
  4. By measuring how those points move between consecutive frames, the VX calculates club speed, face angle, path, lie angle, angle of attack, and impact location.

This is not an estimation based on ball flight. It’s direct measurement from image analysis, just without requiring the user to physically alter the club.

Reliable and Consistent Club Data

In my personal testing and side-by-side comparisons with sticker-based systems like the Foresight GCQuad, the ProTee VX delivers club data that’s impressively consistent.

Club speed and club path readings track closely to the GCQuad on all clubs and shot types. Occasionally, I’ve noticed some variance in face-to-path numbers with higher lofted clubs (like wedges), but the patterns remain consistent—which is what matters for tracking improvement.

One important thing to highlight: ProTee’s shot video and impact replays make it easy to visually verify what happened. If you see a big hook but the data says you left the face wide open, the video will show whether the measurement makes sense. That kind of transparency builds trust.

Impact Location and Lie Angle

ProTee VX also tracks impact location on the club face—high, low, toe, heel—with no need for face tape. The impact screen visual shows precisely where contact was made, which pairs perfectly with the swing camera replay and shot video.

You’ll also get lie angle at impact, helping you dial in whether your club is too upright or flat during the swing—critical info for custom fitting or swing adjustment.

Ball data from the ProTee VX is comprehensive and accurate. It includes:

It uses real images of the ball, captured immediately post-impact, to measure spin. Unlike radar-based systems that calculate spin from trajectory and club data, ProTee uses actual visual spin tracking—a method that’s more precise indoors.

That’s where the Ball Spin Validator comes in. After each shot, you’ll see a video of the ball spinning with colored dots overlaid. Those dots should track the movement of the logo or markings on your ball. If they do, spin was captured correctly. If they don’t, you’ll know immediately.

Few systems offer this kind of real-time spin confirmation. It’s one of the most reassuring features for serious users.

Performance With Different Golf Balls

Unlike some camera systems that track individual dimples (like Uneekor), the ProTee VX requires standard golf balls with visible markings—a logo, alignment line, or number. Completely blank balls won’t work well, especially at high ball speeds.

That said, you don’t need specialty balls or manufacturer-specific models. A basic Titleist Pro V1 with its stock logo is more than sufficient. I’ve tested it with both regular balls and high-contrast options like the TaylorMade Pix, and both perform great.

Putting Performance: Dialing It In

At default settings, I noticed ProTee VX putts came out hot—about 1–1.5 mph faster than real-world speeds. That made it hard to judge distances.

I used a stimp meter to measure my putting turf (GrassTex Money Putt) and found it was rolling around 11. Inside ProTee Labs, I adjusted the GSPro putt speed multiplier to 0.8, and the in-sim and real-world rolls lined up.
